Vitamin D and Weight Loss
6 Comments
The level of vitamin D a person could be a predictor of their ability to lose body fat, according Shalamar Sibley, a researcher at the School of Medicine, University of Minnesota. In a clinical study with 38 people, she found that vitamin D levels at baseline predicted higher body fat loss, especially in the abdominal area. In other words, it is possible that an inadequate level of vitamin D may hinder or block the ability to lose weight through low calorie diet.Sibley cautions, however, that their study is purely observational, and therefore has not shown a definite causal relationship between weight loss and vitamin D. The next step will then design a follow-up study where vitamin D is administered in a controlled manner and it is studied as a supplement to standard treatments aimed at weight loss in people whose level of vitamin D is inadequate.
Vitamin D deficiency is epidemic proportions in many countries. According to one estimate, 36 percent of young adults in America who are otherwise healthy, are deficient in vitamin D, and that number grows to about 57 percent for patients hospitalized for general medical causes
Deficiencies of vitamin D is increasingly linked to a host of diseases including high blood pressure, cardiovascular problems, kidney disease, and increased risk of certain cancers, including breast and prostate.
Recently, an investigation found that a group of 150 patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain, 93 percent had vitamin D deficiency
Vitamin D can be obtained from sources which include certain kinds of fish (of which the herring, salmon and tuna are examples), and certain other foods. In addition, our bodies produce it naturally through sun exposure. Unfortunately, those living in sunny little nations do not have sufficient opportunity to properly procure this valuable vitamin.
Taking supplements can be a solution for people who know or suspect that lack enough vitamin D. It’s not good to take it in excess because too high levels can be toxic.
